Foods That Are Low in Fat & Make You Full

When dieting in an attempt to lose weight, many people experience feelings of hunger in between meals. These feelings can be frustrating and lead people to stray off their diet. It is important to choose low-fat foods that are high in fiber and protein in order to stay full longer and not experience hunger while dieting.
  1. Fruits

    • When choosing fruit, it is easy to pick options that satisfy sweet cravings while providing minimal amounts of fat. Citrus fruits, such as oranges or limes, have a high water content that leads to full feelings. Apples are high in dietary fiber, meaning that they digest slowly and reduce hunger.

    Whole Grains

    • Whole grains provide a high amount of fiber with minimal fat content. Some choices for satisfying whole grains include oatmeal, barley and cereal. Popcorn is also considered a whole grain and it makes a nice, low-fat snack in between meals, as long as there is no added butter.

    Vegetables

    • Fibrous vegetables will cause dieters to feel full longer in much the same way as apples. Some fibrous vegetables include broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Eating a salad made with leafy greens and fibrous vegetables before each meal has been shown to contribute to weight loss by reducing the amount eaten at each meal.

    Beans

    • Beans are another fibrous food, with the benefit of protein to slow digestion even more. When choosing beans it is important to check the fat content, as some are more high in fat than others. Kidney beans, mung beans, lima beans, navy beans and pinto beans are some of the lower fat options to choose from.

    Dairy Products

    • Dairy can be filling and provide calcium and protein, but it is important to choose low-fat or fat-free options. Healthy dairy choices that are low in fat include skim milk, low-fat cheese, 0 percent cottage cheese and fat-free yogurt.
