The Effect of Dairy Products & Atrial Fib
Atrial fibrillation may be caused by a variety of triggers but there has been no conclusive evidence that links an episode of atrial fibrillation with dairy products in the diet.-
Definition
-
Atrial fibrillation is irregular heart rhythm. Instead of a regular rhythm, several electrical charges happen quickly, causing the heartbeat to become rapid and chaotic.
Internal Factors
-
The most common cause of atrial fibrillation is damage to the heart. Among the possible causes are high blood pressure, sleep apnea, an abnormal heart valve and viral infections.
Diet
-
The only dietary factors that seem to trigger atrial fibrillation are caffeine and alcohol. One particular study suggested that some of the antibiotics used in dairy cows might trigger atrial fibrillation in individuals who use dairy products taken from those animals, but the research was not conclusive.
Prevention/Solution
-
While there is no known way to prevent atrial fibrillation, engaging in a regimen of moderate exercise and eating a healthy diet are recommended by most physicians.
Treatment
-
Treatment consists of drugs designed to relieve stress on the heart along with beta blockers. Evidence indicates that cholesterol-lowering drugs might have a beneficial effect.
