What Is the Subway Diet?

The Subway diet is a diet that emphasizes eating food low in fat. To follow the Subway diet, you simply substitute two meals every day with a Subway sub sandwich. These two subs must contain no more than 6 g of fat. The diet spokesman, Jared Fogle, lost more than 200 pounds while on the Subway diet.
  1. History

    • Jared Fogle weighed more than 425 pounds when he was a Junior at Indiana University. Jared was a cashier at an adult book store. Jared rarely got any exercise and therefore gained weight. Jared's roommate became concerned with his weight and encouraged Jared to see a doctor. One day Jared walked to Subway, which was 1.5 miles from his dorm and he ate lunch. He soon realized that doing this could help him lose weight. Jared chose a diet soft drink, baked potato chips and a low fat sub for his meal. Doing this twice a day, caused Jared to lose 245 pounds in only one year. Jared contacted Subway about his success and since then Subway created the Subway diet, also known as the Jared diet.

    Media

    • In 2000, the advertisement for the Subway diet aired for the first time and included Jared's story. National reporters became interested in the story and soon the Subway diet hit headlines across the world. Jared was known as the "Subway Guy" and became famous overnight. Subway's sales rose 18 percent in the first year. Jared currently works with the media and for Subway traveling the country giving lectures on how to eat healthy.

    Eight Under Six

    • The eight subs that have 6 grams or less of fat are the veggie delight, ham, turkey breast, turkey breast and ham, roast beef, oven roasted chicken breast, Subway club and the sweet onion chicken teriyaki. These subs should be ordered with no cheese or mayonnaise to remain under 6 grams of fat.

    Extras

    • In addition to your Subway under six sandwich you may also choose a small bag of baked potato chips. For a drink, you should choose a diet soft drink or water. This meal should replace two of your three basic meals, every day. Your third meal should contain sensible sized portions.

    Exercise

    • Jared not only ate Subway twice a day, he also walked there. If you cannot walk to your local Subway you should find other means of exercise. A 20-minute workout everyday may suffice. You can also go for a mile or more walk daily, even if it is not a walk to Subway. Exercise and healthy food can help you lose weight just as Jared did.
