What do bad bacteria eat?
Bacteria feed on a wide range of organic compounds, including proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and nucleic acids. Some bacteria also fix nitrogen from the air, while others obtain their energy from inorganic compounds such as sulfur or hydrogen. Bad bacteria, or pathogens, can cause disease in humans and other animals by producing toxins or by damaging tissues and organs.
Here are some examples of what some bad bacteria eat:
- Escherichia coli (E. coli): This bacterium is found in the intestines of humans and animals. Some strains of E. coli are harmless, while others can cause food poisoning, urinary tract infections, and pneumonia. E. coli feeds on a variety of carbohydrates, including glucose, lactose, and sucrose.
- Salmonella: Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause food poisoning. It is found in raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, and milk. Salmonella feeds on a variety of proteins, including those in meat, poultry, and eggs.
- Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus): This bacterium causes pneumonia, meningitis, and other infections. It is spread through respiratory droplets. Pneumococcus feeds on a variety of carbohydrates, including glucose, lactose, and sucrose.
- Staphylococcus aureus (staph): This bacterium is found on the skin and in the nose of many healthy people. However, it can cause infections if it enters the body through a cut or wound. Staph feeds on a variety of proteins, including those in skin, blood, and pus.
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis (tuberculosis): This bacterium causes tuberculosis, a disease that affects the lungs. It is spread through respiratory droplets. Tuberculosis feeds on a variety of lipids, including those in the lungs and other tissues.
