21 Day Detox Plan Outline
Many are using the ancient art of fasting and cleansing to detoxify the body and lose weight. It is also beneficial in eliminating harmful toxins acquired from the foods we eat, chemicals we use each day and even the air we breathe. Detox guru and author of the Master Cleanse, Dr. Elson Haas, suggests regular detoxification helps to renew the body and prevent disease. The following is a simple three-week detox plan that does not require complete fasting.-
The Detox Diet
-
During this 21 day cleanse, eliminate all processed foods, dairy and meat from the diet. Avoid sugar, coffee, soda and alcohol throughout the cleanse. Drink only herbal teas, fresh fruit juices and purified water. Allow your body time to adjust, but gradually begin to decrease the amount of food consumed. Eat only whole grains, (brown rice, millet, buckwheat) legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables. The vegetables may be raw, sauteed or steamed. Remember to drink plenty of water. Dr. Elson Haas suggests taking the juice of one half squeezed lemon and a large glass of water in the morning upon rising. Lemon has an added cleansing effect and helps to stimulate digestion.
Supplements
-
Take a daily fiber supplement, such as psyllium powder, to cleanse the intestinal tract. Decreased appetite is another added benefit of fiber supplementation. However, it is important to drink adequate water with fiber supplements, which if not taken properly, can actually cause blockages in the intestines.
Another safe herbal supplement with a natural laxative effect is cascara sagrada. According to Clayton College of Natural Health, it is a natural chelating agent (binds to toxins in the system), and stimulates secretions in the digestive tract. It is antibacterial and can be used to prevent gallstones. It is taken in capsule or tincture form. Take one to two capsules before bedtime to encourage elimination.
Following the Cleanse
-
Ease back into a "normal" diet. Avoid eating meat the first day following the cleanse, which is harder to digest. Try dairy in small quantities. Use the time during the cleanse to assess your overall diet and make changes where needed. Take this opportunity to renew your commitment to your health, and continue to avoid processed foods, sugary treats, junk foods, coffee, alcohol and other toxins as much as possible. As a general rule, you should always chew your food slowly and thoroughly. Take time to relax a few minutes before and after your meal, and eat sitting in an upright position. These simple steps help to improve overall digestion and absorption.
Complete a 21 day detox program at least once a year. Individuals who live in highly polluted areas, have stressful lifestyles or drink a lot of caffeine and alcohol should detox more often. For most, Dr. Haas recommends a seasonal cleanse.
