Cayenne Pepper Detox

The Cayenne Pepper Detox is also known as the Lemonade Diet, the Maple Syrup Diet or the Master Cleanse. The plan was first published by Stanley Burroughs over 60 years ago, but rose to popularity again after singer Beyonce Knowles publicized her success with the diet when preparing for her role in "Dreamgirls." It's a simple plan, and fans swear by its efficacy.
  1. Detox Basics

    • The Cayenne Pepper Detox is actually a form of a fast rather than a diet, although weight loss normally occurs. Because it is a fast, there are no foods to prepare, only the detox drink taken six times a day. The drink is made of lemon juice, grade B maple syrup, cayenne pepper and filtered water. The length of the fast can vary from four to 14 days, with 10 days being the average. Introduce solid foods gradually when ending the fast.

    Detox Drink Ingredients

    • Making the detox drink is not difficult, but it is important to use the proper ingredients, since the purpose of the Cayenne Pepper Detox is to remove impurities from the body. Fresh-squeezed juice from organic lemons is the ideal. Avoid bottled juice, which may contain added sugar or chemicals.

Each serving of the detox drink will also contain two tablespoons of grade B maple syrup. Again, organic is preferred. Grade B maple syrup is not the usual pancake syrup found in grocery stores; in fact, many pancake syrups are maple-flavored corn syrup, not maple syrup at all. Grade B maple syrup is very dark, with a strong maple flavor, and is sometimes called cooking syrup.

Include a small amount of cayenne pepper in each drink, approximately 1/10 teaspoon. Cayenne pepper is believed to increase metabolism and decrease appetite, and is a vital component of the detox. Combine all of the ingredients in eight to 10 ounces of filtered water. It can be taken either hot or cold, but drink at least six detox drinks daily.

      2 tbsp. lemon juice
2 tbsp. grade B maple syrup
      1/10 tsp. cayenne pepper
8 to 10 ounces filtered water

    Other Instructions

    • There is one additional daily components of the Cayenne Pepper Detox. First thing in the morning and again before bed, drink either a cup of herbal laxative tea or a cleansing salt solution. To make the salt solution, mix two teaspoons of sea salt (not table salt) with 32 ounces of water and drink. Do this to keep the intestines functioning while deprived of food.

    Breaking the Fast

    • It is important to reintroduce solid food gradually after fasting. Burroughs recommends drinking only orange juice the first two days after cleansing, adding raw fruits and vegetables on the third day. A vegetarian vegetable soup is also a good choice for the third day, but make the soup from scratch with fresh ingredients; condensed canned soups are high in sodium and contain chemical additives.
