Ways to Use Whey

Whey is a translucent liquid, leftover after the curds are removed from curdled milk, that is packed with nutrients. Typically, it is a by-product of the cheese-making process. Whey is high in protein and contains lactoflavin and vitamins B, C and B2, making it a great addition to food. Outside of cooking, whey can also be used for animal feed and body care.
  1. Food and Drink

    • Whey protein is often added to smoothies as a protein supplement.

Whey in its liquid form is a flavorful additive to cooking. You can use it in baking whenever water or stock is called for (bread is particularly recommended), to boil pasta, beans and rice in, to make candy and to make ricotta and mizithra cheeses. Beverages can also be made from whey, including alcoholic beverages and fruit drinks. Whey protein is often used as a supplement for athletes and as a milk alternative.

    On the Farm

    • Whey can be used in livestock feed.

Whey can be used as animal feed. Whey has been successfully fed to cows, sheep, swine and poultry for years. The advantage of using whey is that animals show better growth and reach maturity more quickly than animals whose feed is not supplemented with whey.

    Hair and Skin Care

    • Add shine and strengthen your hair with whey.

Rinsing with whey after you shampoo is a great way to strengthen your hair. Simply leave the whey in your hair for 15 minutes and rinse. This can be done as often as you shampoo. Whey can be used in the place of mousse or gel, and has the added bonus of strengthening and softening hair. Whey has multiple uses when it comes to skin care. A whey bath is great for the skin, the combination of whey and tea bags will brighten up tired eyes and it can be used as a cleanser, toner and moisturizer on your face.
