Salmon Oil Information

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating fish twice a week for its health benefits. You can get many of the same benefits from taking salmon oil capsules. Just remember that not all oil supplements are the same; cod liver oil contains lower omega-3 fatty acids than salmon oil.
  1. Heart Health

    • In 2002, the AHA advised that patients with heart disease use fish oil. Their report states that "men who ate at least some fish weekly had a lower coronary heart disease mortality rate than that of men who ate none."

    Omega-3 Fatty Acids

    • Salmon oil is high in both eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids. These lower cholesterol and improve cell performance.

    Warning

    • It's good to discuss all your vitamins and health supplements with your doctor. Even natural health remedies can interact with medication.

    Mercury

    • The AHA's report titled "Safety of Omega-3 Fatty Acids" states that "supplements are essentially mercury free," so many people choose to take salmon oil supplements instead of eating fish to avoid mercury. (The AHA has salmon on the low mercury list and still advises eating it twice a week.)

    Flaxseed Oil

    • Flaxseed oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, but it also has omega-6 fatty acids. Most people already have a high level of omega-6 in their diet, so flaxseed oil isn't a good health supplement.
