Super Foods for the Brain

The importance of maintaining a healthy brain cannot be overstated. It is the organ that controls cognitive thought, the electrical impulses that run through the nervous system, and the functioning of all the biological systems in the body. Taking care of the brain begins with diet. The food that goes into a body offers nutrients, antioxidants and natural chemicals that enhance the brain's functioning and protects it from harm.
  1. Fish

    • Fish, such as salmon, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These are needed for the brain to function properly and not having them in the diet contributes to dementia and a diminished intellectual performance.

    Green Tea

    • Green tea helps promote mental awareness and is known to prevent plaque buildup in the brain. The powdered form of the tea, Japanese matcha, is the best source of green tea.

    Blueberries

    • Blueberries are a super food with a reputation as being the "brain berry." They are full of antioxdiants that fight off free radical damage in the brain that could contribute to cancer or other diseases.

    Eggs

    • Eggs are a great source of protein, but more importantly, choline. This is a fat-like B vitamin that helps enhance memory.

    Whole Grains

    • Whole grains are an easy way to get complex carbohydrates into your body. These are necessary to give your brain the energy it needs to function properly.
