Food Cures for Diarrhea

Diarrhea occurs when fluids in your bowels are not absorbed efficiently by the body and is sometimes caused by a variety of health conditions. Viruses, parasites and bacteria in the intestines or that enter the body via the food you consume can cause diarrhea. Luckily, there are foods you can consume to alleviate the condition.
  1. Blueberries

    • Blueberries contain antibiotic properties that defend the body against bacteria such as E. coli. Try making a soup one third blueberries and two thirds water to treat the condition, as the fruit helps soothe membranes in the stomach and intestines so your digestion can return to normal. Boil two to six tablespoons of blueberries in 150 milliliters of water, then strain it and drink it as a tea, or add 1/2 cup fresh blueberries to whole-grain cereal to alleviate diarrhea.

    Carrots

    • Carrots, particularly in juice form, help rebalance electrolytes in the body when you have diarrhea. Consume a cup of carrot juice or cooked carrots to help restore your digestive system to normal and give body to your stool, as these vegetables contain insoluble fibers that form a gel-like substance after being consumed. A single cup of cooked carrots offers 6.8 grams of fiber.

    Garlic

    • Raw, fresh garlic offers your digestive system antiparasitic agents that help destroy bacteria that cause diarrhea. Garlic can be used to treat roundworm, a common parasite in the intestines, and contains allicin, which has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. It can also be used to treat ulcers, as well. Each garlic glove is equals to about a 1-gram serving, and you can safely consume two to four grams daily for the treatment of diarrhea.

    Foods Containing Probiotics

    • Foods containing probiotics, such as lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacteria, can help alleviate the effects of diarrhea by promoting production of healthy bacteria in the intestines. You can find probiotics in such foods as bananas, honey, garlic, barley, wheat, onions and yogurt.
