Cures for Stomach Gas

Stomach gas is mostly produced by the colon as a by-product of food digestion or from swallowing air. It affects almost everyone and can often be embarrassing and uncontrollable. However, there are plenty of remedies that can help the discomfort including herbal remedies, over-the-counter products, and simply by monitoring they types of foods that are consumed.
  1. Herbal Remedies

    • Herbal remedies are a great solution when it comes to easing gas. Peppermint, cinnamon and ginger oils work well since they help relax stomach muscles. Two drops of concentrated oil in a glass of water or directly on the tongue works well. Otherwise, peppermint, ginger and chamomile (also a muscle relaxant) teas can be brewed with hot water.

    Over-the-Counter Remedies

    • There are many convenient gas reducers available for purchase that are inexpensive and easily accessible. The majority of these products are now available over the counter. Brand name products like Tums, Beano, Gas-X, Mylanta and Maalox all work to help reduce gas. Most of the products contain an ingredient called simethicone, which is an anti-foaming agent. In addition, certain products like Lactaid, which aids in gas reduction for lactose intolerant individuals, contain enzymes to help digest lactose sugars more easily.

    Food Awareness

    • Most importantly, gas is mainly caused by the foods consumed. Highly fibrous foods have the tendency to produce more gas since fiber is a difficult substance to digest. Foods like cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage), high-fiber grains, fruits such as apples and pears, and beans all contain large amounts of fiber. And although fiber is important for a healthy diet, individuals who do not normally consume large doses of fiber should do so gradually until the intestinal tract can accommodate the digestion process. Carbonated beverages and any process that involves swallowing more air than normal, like eating too fast, can also cause gas.

In addition, some individuals may find that components like artificial sweeteners, caffeine and alcohol cause discomfort and unusual amounts of gas production. Therefore, if this is a problem, those items should be avoided.
