Sources of Calcium

Calcium is an important mineral that people need for healthy growth and reproduction. Most calcium in the body can be found in teeth and bones. Although most of the calcium people need is found in dairy products, other foods are sources of calcium.
  1. Dairy Sources

    • Dairy products are the most important source of calcium. These products include yogurt, cheese, milk and buttermilk.

    Green Leafy Sources

    • Green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, collards, kale, mustard greens, turnip greens and Chinese cabbage (or bok choy) are good sources of calcium.

    Other Sources

    • Other foods that are a good source of calcium include shellfish, almonds, Brazil nuts and dried beans. Calcium is also in dietary supplements and in medicines, such as antacids.

    Too Much Calcium

    • A person who takes too much calcium over a period of time increases her risk for kidney stones.

    Calcium Deficiency

    • A person who does not take enough calcium over a long period can develop osteoporosis, osteonecrosis (or loss of the jaw bone), hypertension and other medical disorders.
