The Effects of Blue-Green Algae
Blue-green algae (BGA) are called "superfoods" by some. They're also known as cyanobacteria--ancient micro-organisms that live in oceans, lakes and soil, produce their own food and are believed to be billions of years old. BGA can start as invisible, one-celled organisms but often grow into communities large enough to be seen with the human eye. In addition to growing naturally in the aforementioned locations, blue-green algae can also be cultivated in controlled environments by laboratories or manufacturers for use in scientific studies or as dietary supplements. Alternative health practitioners tout BGA as a health aid. However, use of blue-green algae has been shown to have negative side effects as well.-
Types
-
BGA products are available in tablet, capsule or powder form. They come under brand names such as Klamath, Source Naturals, Now Foods and Cell Tech.
Benefits
-
Positive effects from taking BGA have been seen in sufferers of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. They noticed improved stamina and energy levels, and more resistance to stress. Other BGA consumers have reportedly experienced improvement in memory and the ability to concentrate and enhanced functioning of the immune system.
Side Effects
-
Negative side effects that BGA users developed include headache, nausea, diarrhea and numbness. The greatest risk is that some BGA naturally produce toxic microcystins.
Expert Insight
-
Microcystins can build up in the liver and cause damage to that vital organ. Children are particularly vulnerable because of their low body weight. Researchers suggest that microcystins are more often found in BGA derived from natural sources (lakes and oceans) and therefore, algae products produced in controlled environments are said to be less risky.
Considerations
-
Some Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients reported that results from BGA use were quickly evident--within one to two days after consumption. Others found that exceeding the maximum recommended dose made them unable to sleep at night.
Warning
-
The use of BGA products is not recommended for severely ill patients or for children. Even for healthy adults or those with mild health problems, long-term use of naturally derived blue-green algae is not advised. Consult a doctor before beginning use.
