High Carbohydrate & Low-Fat Diet Ideas
-
Good Vs. Bad Carbohydrates
-
There are two types of carbohydrates. The "good" carbohydrates do not cause spikes or drops in blood sugar. Good carbohydrates are generally associated with foods that have high vitamin and mineral content. In general, healthy carbohydrates are found in both fruits and vegetables and in whole grains.
Fruits and Vegetables
-
Fruits and vegetables are outstanding sources of healthy carbohydrates. Foods with high fiber, like apples and berries, are good sources of high carbohydrate, high fiber foods that are lower in sugars than some fruits, like peaches, oranges or other citrus fruit. Melons are high in carbohydrates and water, but low in calories. Tomatoes are excellent sources of carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, but contain very few calories and sugars. Some fruits and vegetables, like avocados, are high in healthy fats and oils and also contain good carbohydrates. Because they are high in fats, talk with your doctor about an appropriate consumption level for your goals.
Whole Grains
-
Whole grains are complete, healthy carbohydrates that also contain both vitamins and minerals. Avoid refined flours and products made with refined flours. White flour and potatoes have higher "bad" carbohydrates. Eating breads and snacks made from whole wheat flour are an excellent source of healthy carbohydrates. Pasta is often not recommended because it is usually made from white flour. However, whole wheat pastas are easy to find and can be an excellent source of healthy carbohydrates, especially when paired with a simple vegetarian marinara sauce.
