Sour Stomach Relief

Though common, if left untreated, sour stomach can lead to long-term problems like ulcers. Also called acid indigestion, sour stomach comes from too much acid in the digestive tract, which often causes burning in the stomach itself, as well as acid reflux and heartburn. Here are some ways to treat sour stomach. However, if you experience it frequently for a prolonged amount of time, it is best to consult a physician or specialist who deals with the digestive tract.
  1. Drink Relief

    • Try a spoonful of baking soda dissolved into a glass of water, and drink it quickly. If you are squeamish about the taste, try ginger tea, which soothes your stomach and bring down acid levels. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon, which will neutralize the acid.

    Change Eating Patterns

    • Go easy on fried foods, especially if you are eating late at night. In general, you should avoid eating heavy meals if you plan to sleep within the next 2 to 3 hours. Your body cannot digest food properly while you are lying down. Also avoid drinking or eating these foods by themselves: coffee, citrus fruits, fatty foods, alcohol and chocolate, all of which can create or worsen sour stomach.

    Change Your Lifestyle

    • Stop smoking if you do. Tobacco irritates more than just your lungs; it irritates your throat and digestive track, and increases your risk of peptic ulcers. Also consider long-term changes. Stress can worsen stomach problems, so taking part in daily mediation and yoga as well as exercise will benefit you over time. When weather permits, skip the treadmill and head into a park or forest and reconnect with nature. It is good for the mind, body and soul.
