Ulcerative Colitis & Exercise
Ulcerative colitis can make any activity difficult when you are suffering from a flare-up. During a flare-up, the severe and frequent diarrhea and abdominal cramps limit the things you can do. However, having a flare-up isn't a reason to stop exercising. In fact, light exercise may help to minimize the symptoms of the flare-up.-
Stay Hydrated
-
People with ulcerative colitis should be especially careful to avoid becoming dehydrated. To stay hydrated, drink water before you begin exercising and during your exercise routine. Thirst is a sign of mild to moderate dehydration. As such, drink fluids even if you aren't thirsty.
Location
-
During an ulcerative colitis flare-up, you may be worried about having to be more than a couple of steps from the bathroom. One way to tackle this problem is to work out at home. Even in the midst of a flare-up, exercises such as yoga and tai-chi can help you to relax and destress, which can reduce the severity of the flare-up. If you have a treadmill or other exercise equipment at home, strategically place at least one of the machines in a room adjacent to the bathroom.
Breathing During Exercise
-
When you are exercising, practice deep breathing techniques. These will keep your abdominal muscles relaxed, which should minimize the cramping. When you suffer from ulcerative colitis, staying healthy and relaxed are equally important.
