Tips to Jump Start Metabolism
Maintaining a high metabolism is one of the best ways to lose body fat and maintain a healthy weight throughout life. While genetics do play a part in your metabolic rate, there are some things you can do to get the most out of your metabolism.-
One Word: Eat
-
Skipping meals may seem like just the thing to lose weight, but the truth is that your body needs fuel to work efficiently and maintain your metabolism. Eat three meals each day, starting with breakfast. Skipping breakfast only slows your metabolism for the day. Healthy snacks between meals will help keep the metabolic fire burning all day long. Making low-fat protein part of each meal and snack will also help get your metabolic rate up and keep it there, as your digestive system works harder to digest things like milk, fish and turkey than a simple bagel or pasta.
Get Moving
-
Exercise raises your metabolic level for approximately two hours after your workout. The more often you exercise, the better and more consistent your metabolism will be. Be sure to include both cardio (walking, running, biking) and weight training exercises. If you split your workout into two sessions during the day, you will double the duration of high metabolism. Consider doing the cardio portion of your workout in the morning and lifting weights after work, or splitting your morning run into two portions.
Drink Green Tea
-
This may seem too easy, but an element in green tea has been shown to encourage the body to burn calories. You should drink 2 to 4 cups of green tea each day to receive the metabolic benefit. Since hydration is a key to good health in general, why not raise your metabolism in the process?
