Uses for Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to proper health and bodily function. This important nutrient is not produced by the body and must be consumed often to stay present in the system. Omega 3s can be found in sources such as fish, nut oils and flaxseed products. Though omega 3s are better absorbed through food, supplements are also beneficial.
  1. Depression

    • Omega 3 fatty acids help fight depression in unipolar cases. It improves the amount of action in the serotonin and dopamine pathways of the brain to assist in stabilizing mental health.

    Heart Health

    • Omega 3 fatty acids have shown to lower the risk of heart disease. Eating fish at least twice per week can decrease arrhythmias, lower blood pressure and lower triglyceride levels as stated by the American Heart Association in 2002.

    Skin

    • Omega 3 fatty acids are directly linked to youthful and healthy skin. It has the ability to calm irritation and inflammation, keep skin soft and moisturized and finally, keep skin clear. These fatty acids have cellular building blocks that repair skin damage and disease. Even those who suffer from eczema and psoriasis show improvement with omega 3 fatty acids.

    Crohn's Disease

    • Crohn's disease is a serious condition caused by inflammation of ulcers inside the colon. Though omega 3 fatty acids cannot cure this disease, it has been reported that with regular supplementation and incorporation of omega 3s in a daily diet, symptoms of Crohn's disease are less severe.

    Vision

    • Omega 3 fatty acids make up a large part of the retina in the eye. Because the body does not produce omega 3 fatty acids, ophthalmologists are discovering just how important it is to include omega 3 fatty acids in your normal diet in order to maintain healthy vision at any age.

    Asthma

    • There has been some evidence that omega 3 fatty acids are helpful with exercise-related asthma and in reducing allergies. Omega 3s decrease inflammation and foster lung health to prevent asthma attacks.

    Arthritis

    • People who suffer from arthritis have benefited from increasing their intake of omega 3 fatty acids and report that they experience less joint tenderness in the morning. This is because omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in the joints.
