What Is Pyridoxine?
Pyridoxine, also known as vitamin B6 and pyridoxine hydrochloride, is a member of the B vitamin family and is considered a micro-nutrient. This water soluble vitamin plays a vital role in nervous system function and immune support. Pyridoxine is found in red meat, organ meats, liver, greens, fish, apricots legumes, whole grains and seeds.-
Immune Support and Pyridoxine
-
Pyrodixine is essential to the human bodys production of anti-bodies. Pyridoxine deficiency causes white blood cells to plummet and as a result, there is a subsequent reduction in the antibodies that are produced.
Protection Against Diabetic Nerve Disease
-
In people with diabetes, there has been a demonstrated correlation between diabetic nerve disease (neuropathy) and pyridoxine deficiency. The supplementation of pyrixodine prevents what is referred to as glycosylation of proteins. A study conducted by L.R.and others in 1989, found that glycosylation of proteins was one of the major risk factors for developing diabetic neuropathy.
Pyridoxine and Kidney Stones
-
A deficiency of pyridoxine can lead to the formation of kidney stones. Calcium oxalate, which is what commonly causes kidney stones to form, can be reduced through supplementation or a diet rich in pyridoxine.
Depression and Pyridoxine
-
Pyridoxine levels are low in individuals suffering with depression. The supplementation of Pyridoxine has many functions in the human brain, one of which is the manufacturing of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter manufactured in the brain, which helps to regulate mood.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
-
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, or CTS, is a disorder of the median nerve in the wrist that causes pain and weakness. Supplementation with pyridoxine has been shown to successfully alleviate the symptoms associated with CTS.
Contraindications for Pyridoxine
-
When derived from foods, there are no known side effects associated with pyridoxine. However, when taken orally as a supplement in excess of 200mg a day, there have been incidences of neuropathy and skin disorders reported.
