What Is Erythritol Powder?

Erythritol is an all natural, no calorie alternative to sugar. Similar to sucrose, erythritol is a white, odorless, crystalline powder. It looks, feels, bakes and tastes just like sugar. Erythritol has been used as a food ingredient in Japan since the 1980s. Recently, it has been approved by the U.S. and Canada based on extensive research by doctors, scientists and expert panels.
  1. Caloric Content

    • Erythritol has a very low caloric content, with a per gram value of 0.2 calories in the United States.

    Found in Nature

    • Certain fruits like grapes, melons and pears have low levels of erythritol occurring naturally. Higher levels of erythritol can be found in wine, where fruits have been fermented over time.

    Daily Consumption

    • Somewhere between 30 and 100 micrograms of natural erythritol are consumed each day in our regular diets.

    Production

    • By using the same biological processes that make fermented products like yogurt from milk, and soy sauce from soybeans, sugar is mixed with water and fermented with a natural culture to make erythritol.

    Gastrointestinal Effects

    • Erythritol is easily absorbed in the small intestines and quickly eliminated by the body. Clinical studies have shown that erythritol does not cause harmful gastrointestinal effects when used as intended.

    Non-Cariogenic

    • Foods that contain erythritol have been approved by the FDA to claim they do not promote tooth decay. Erythritol is resistant to oral bacteria that can cause enamel loss and cavities.
