Consumer Packaging, Labeling and Food Regulations in Canada

Checking food packaging before it is bought is a great way to understand the nutrition contained in a particular product. There are several regulations in Canada that aim to help consumers become more informed about what they are eating.
  1. Packaging and Labeling Act

    • According to Canada Business, the Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act requires any manufacturer or producer to give accurate labeling information on their products. False labels, or a lack of proper labeling, can lead to fines.

    Labeling

    • According to the Canadian Government, the goal of packaging and labeling regulations is to allow consumers to make informed decisions about what they are actually purchasing.

    Nutrition

    • One main goal is to allow consumers to know the nutrition facts of actual products; a nutrition facts table is required on many different food products available in Canada.

    Ingredients

    • A table of ingredients must be featured on food products; the product packaging must also list certified, specific claims on where it was manufactured and/or if it is low fat or low calorie.

    Exemptions

    • There are certain things that do not fall under the specific labeling act. According to Canada Business, this includes industrial products, drugs and medical products, export-only products and artist supplies, among others.
