Risks & Benefits of Pomegranate Juice
-
Heart Health
-
"The American Journal of Cardiology" published a study that concluded that pomegranate juice improves blood flow to the heart by as much as 17 percent. This may help those who are suffering from heart disease, or are at risk of developing it.
Cholesterol
-
Pomegranate juice may help reduce arterial plaque. It also lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) and raises good cholesterol (HDL).
Antioxidants
-
Pomegranate juice contains many antioxidants and vitamins. This helps boost the immune system. Additionally, it may help prevent or retard the growth of prostate cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer (see Resources).
Sugar
-
The health benefits of pomegranate juice may be balanced out by its high sugar content. An 8-oz. glass of juice exceeds the FDA's recommended maximum daily sugar allowance (10 percent of daily calories from sugar). Diabetics should limit pomegranate juice intake.
Statin Therapy
-
Patients on statin therapy should discuss pomegranate juice with their doctor before trying it. Pomegranate juice may inhibit an enzyme (CYP 450) that may raise the risk of rhabdomyolysis.
