How to Find Out Protein Content in a Food

When planning a diet to suit our personal needs, it is necessary to understand the nutritional content of the foods we eat. For those going on a vegetarian diet, it is important to find foods that are high in protein. There are several sources that will provide information on the protein content in a food.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the nutritional label on the food packaging. Packaged foods usually have a nutritional label which discloses the amount of calories, protein, sodium, and other minerals found in the food. The amount may be listed as the percentage of the recommended daily requirement for that mineral, or listed as grams.

Visit the Untied States Department of Agriculture's national nutrient online database (see Resources below). Not all foods will include a nutritional label. You can find protein amounts for most foods on the database.

    • 3

Click on the circled "A" next to the word Protein when going to the USDA database. This will list the foods alphabetically.

    • 4

Click on the circled "W" next to the word Protein in the database for a list of foods by nutrient content.
