Diet for Mucous Colitis With Diarrhea

Mucous colitis, otherwise known as spastic colon or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, is characterized by the presence of mucous appearing in the stool. Mucous in the stool can be an alarming condition that should be examined and treated by a doctor. There are, however, dietary changes that you can make that can help spastic colon improve. Here are a few dietary recommendations.
  1. Low Fat

    • Foods high in fat trigger the colon to become spastic and can make the colitis worse. Eat a low fat diet.

    Soluble Fiber

    • Let soluble fiber be the bulk of your diet. Soluble fiber, such as oats or flaxseed, will be your biggest ally in fighting a spastic colon.

    Get Rid of Trigger Foods

    • Get rid of all of the trigger foods and do not let them into your diet. These include alcohol, coffee, eggs, red meats and carbonated beverages.

    Be Careful With Insoluble Fiber

    • Be careful when you eat insoluble fiber, such as fruit and bran. Eat insoluble fiber only after you have eaten something with soluble fiber. Do not eat insoluble fiber if your stomach is empty.

    Eat Slowly

    • Eat slowly and eat smaller meals. Try not to overfill the stomach or eat your food too fast because this can trigger colitis.
