How to Grow Mold on Bread Using Corn Syrup & Honey
Mold spores are everywhere because they are in the air and completely unavoidable. Though they are everywhere, in order to grow and proliferate they need a food source. Molds particularly like sugar, making sugary foods like honey and corn syrup a great fuel source to grow mold. Though yeast and wheat in some breads also are great food for mold to grow, the process goes much faster if you use another substance like corn syrup or honey.Things You'll Need
- Bread
- Honey
- Corn syrup
- Plastic bag w/ seal

1
Pour some honey and corn syrup over a single slice of bread. You just need enough to get it damp. While whole wheat bread works best, white bread is still acceptable but may take a little longer to show mold.
-
2
Tap the slice of bread, moistened side down, on any surface that hasn't been recently sanitized. The stickiness of the corn syrup and honey will pick up any spores that may be lying on the surface, even if they are not visible to the naked eye.
-
3
Place the slice of bread inside a plastic bag and make sure to seal it tight. If the bread dries out, it will take much longer to grow mold, if at all. Sealing it will preserve the moisture needed to quickly make mold.
-
4
Store the bagged bread in a warm or semi-warm place. Do not store in the refrigerator or someplace cold, as this will make the mold spores take longer to grow.
-
5
Check on the bag every 24 hours or so for evidence of mold. It can take anywhere from two to three days to begin growing, so be patient.
