How to Clean Cashews

Cashews offer many health benefits that make them ideal choices as snacks or ingredients in meals. These nuts contain high levels of protein, iron, magnesium and zinc. They also contain a lower fat content than other popular nuts like peanuts and pecans. It is important to properly clean cashews. Grown on the end of cashew apples, the fruit borne by the cashew tree, these nuts are exposed to airborne pesticides, insects and other elements before they are collected and packaged for consumption.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the cashews into the flour sieve.

    • 2

Position the sieve under the water faucet, and rinse the cashews thoroughly with cold water to remove dirt and debris.

    • 3

Remove the cashews from the sieve and place them in a bowl. Fill the bowl with enough cold water to fully submerge the cashews. Place a paper towel over the bowl for two to two and a half hours so they can germinate; germination makes cashews easier to digest.

    • 4

Drain the water from the bowl and place the cashews back into the sieve. Situate the sieve over the sink or drain, and pour the apple cider vinegar over the cashews to cleanse them of any lingering bacteria that wasn't eliminated during the initial rinsing. Rinse the cashews with cold water to remove the smell and taste of the apple cider vinegar.
