Kefir Vs. Soy Yogurt
Both kefir and soy yogurt offer nutritional benefits, but not everyone can digest kefir properly, and some people have reactions to soy products. The best option for each person depends on individual food sensitivities and taste preferences. Try both foods on different days and wait to see how your body reacts.-
Texture
-
Both kefir and soy yogurt have a creamy texture and thick consistency. However, some types of kefir have been processed into a thinner liquid so it's easier to drink down. Soy yogurt varieties have a smooth texture with no lumps. Some types have berries other fruits added in which change the texture.
Beneficial Bacteria and Nutrients
-
Kefir contains a long list of beneficial bacteria, also called flora that help improve digestion. Some of the strains found in kefir include Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris, Klyveromyces marxianus var. marxianus and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis. Kefir also contains protein calcium and vitamin D. Manufacturers also add healthy bacteria into soy yogurt, so read the label to find out what the product contains. In addition, soy yogurt might also contain calcium and other vitamins, making both kefir and soy similar in regard to nutrient density.
Food Sensitivities
-
Some people may have food sensitivities to both soy yogurt and kefir, but this can also depend on how it's made. Most types of kefir are made with cow's milk, which can concern some people who are lactose-intolerant. However, "Better Nutrition Magazine" says some manufacturers add additional strains of beneficial bacteria into kefir which can help reduce digestive problems and lactose-intolerance symptoms. These additional strains of good bacteria can make the product more digestible, which may or may not make a difference for people who are lactose-intolerant because some people have light sensitivities, while others have severe allergies to lactose. You might want to try different brands with extra strains of flora added in to see how your body responds.
Soy yogurt may cause stomach upset for people who are allergic to soy. The Mayo Clinic lists soy as one of the top eight foods that cause food allergies. Soy yogurt varieties might also contain artificial colors, cane juice, fruit and other ingredients. Try different brands made with organic soybeans to find out if this product works best for you.
Flavors
-
Plain kefir taste similar to regular yogurt derived from cow's milk, but it's more tangy than regular yogurt. You can also find kefir with fruit and additional sweeteners added that make it taste more like a smoothie. Regular soy yogurt doesn't taste like traditional yogurt at all. Soy yogurt tastes plain with a light aftertaste, unless additional flavors are added in. Read the label to find out if additional sugars, fruit or other ingredients have been blended in to enhance flavor.
