The Best Age-Fighting Foods

"Eat your vegetables" is an age-old term that is more important now than ever before, especially regarding anti-aging. When it comes to the top age-fighting foods, all but one are plant-derived. According to nutritionists and famed doctors like Mehmet Oz, eating a wide range of veggies and fruit -- and all colors -- is the key to keeping the body and skin healthy and fighting the aging process.
  1. Colorful Berries

    • Blackberries, strawberries, blueberries and acai berries all have polyphenols, which have been proven to slow the aging process. Look for organic to get the highest potency.

    Think Green

    • Broccoli, brussels sprouts, spinach, kale and romaine lettuce all contain phytonutrients (meaning plant-derived), which have antioxidants, which benefit an aging immune system.

    Wine and Dark Chocolate

    • It's true that overindulgence in either of these delicious treats isn't wise, but in moderate amounts, wine and chocolate provide resveratrol and other antioxidants that are good for the skin. Dr. Mehmet Oz says that they neutralize free radicals and prevent aging at a cellular level.

    Round, Colorful Fruits

    • Think round. Apples supply a powerful bioflavonoid called quercetin, which is earning a reputation similar to resveratrol. Oranges, abundant in vitamin C, and tomatoes, rich in lycopene, help keep skin supple and hydrated.

    "Good" Fats

    • Good, or monounsaturated, fats, are found in avocados and olive oil, provide Omega-3 fatty acids, but oily fish like salmon are probably the best source. They keep the skin hydrated, as well as helping control weight, since they make you feel fuller longer.
