How to Identify a Seckel Pear

The pear fruit comes in as many as 3,000 varieties. Each one has a distinctive size, texture and flavor. One of the pears, sometimes called the "sugar pear" for its taste, is the Seckel variety. They're often eaten by themselves, made as desserts, or used as a garnish on salads. There are several ways this pear is unlike its relatives.

      Compare the size of the Seckel pear to the others. The Seckel is the smallest of the pears.

      Look at its body. Seckels are round and chubby with a small neck and short stem.

      Look at its skin. Its color is usually olive green, but it can often have a dark maroon blush that covers the entire surface of the pear.

      Take a bite. Seckel pears are very sweet.

      Notice when it is being sold. These types of pears are in season from September through February.
