How to Find a Nutritionist in Connecticut

You have to be careful when choosing a nutritionist, because the title has no legal restriction. There are people calling themselves nutritionists who do not have the necessary training or who just want to promote certain supplements or diets. Choose a nutritionist who has a degree in nutrition from an accredited college or university (not one that exists just to give nutrition certificates), or a registered dietitian (RD). To call herself an RD, a practitioner must have received the RD certification from the American Dietetic Association, which has rigorous requirements.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what you want the nutritionist to do for you. Often nutritionists have specialties besides general nutrition, such as weight control, eating disorders, diabetes control or sports nutrition.

    • 2

Call the nutrition department of your local college or university. Ask for a list of their graduates or other recommendations for nutritionists.

    • 3

Find a registered dietitian from the American Dietetic Association. Go to their website Eat Right, click on "Find a Registered Dietitian" and type "Connecticut" for area of interest. Pass the cursor over the area you are interested in, and write down the contact information for the dietitians that are listed.

    • 4

Contact the RD's you have chosen and any leads of interest from the college nutrition department. Find out their schedules, availability and prices. Interview three or four that seem to be suitable for your needs.

    • 5

Compare the dietitians you have interviewed or contacted and find the one that best suits your needs. Contact him and set up one or more appointments.
