Determine your eligibility. To qualify for CalFresh food stamps, applicants must be a legal resident of California for at least five years. Applicants are subject to income determination tests; most households must meet a maximum gross income level of 130 percent - according to the Federal poverty level - or 165 percent if the household has disabled or elderly persons.
-
2
Apply for food stamps online by visiting the C 4 Youself website. To access and download the application first register for a new account. Enter a username, password, and security question before completing the application. Have all social security numbers, birth dates, and household income available to complete the application. Review information and click submit.
-
3
Print out an application from the California Department of Social Services website. Click on the "Are You Eligible for CalFresh Benefits?" link and then click on the CalFresh application under the Application Form heading on the following page. Calfresh applications may also be picked up form your county Department of Social Services.
-
4
On paper applications, list current housing, medical and utility expenses. Provide a copy of your state ID or driver's license before mailing or dropping the application off to your local Social Services Department.

5
CalFresh applications are generally reviewed within two weeks. Expect a letter from the California Department of Social Services that outlines your scheduled interview date and time. Contact your local Social Services Department to reschedule or to request a phone interview.
-
6
Attend the interview on time. Bring in required documents listed in your interview packet: valid identification, immigration documents if applicable, Social Security card(s), last paycheck stub, unemployment or Social Security statements and housing and utility receipts.
-
7
Await an acceptance letter from the California Department of Social Services approving your allocated benefit amount. Activate the CalFresh EBT card promptly by dialing the number provided in the letter. Protect your password by keeping it secure.

8
If denied CalFresh benefits, file for an appeal by contacting the California Department of Social Services to request an appeal form.
