How to Substitute Sugar With Sweetener

Diet and nutrition is imperative to some individuals with certain conditions that cannot consume regular sugar. Artificial sweeteners can also be used for calorie control, providing the sweet taste with none of the calories. Artificial sweeteners are also suggested by dentists because they do not contribute to cavities and tooth decay as regular sugar does, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Brown rice malt syrup resembles honey and consists of complex carbs and maltose.

Pick up brown rice malt syrup for baking purposes to use instead of sugar. Use cup per cup of brown rice malt syrup for the sugar, but decrease the liquid component of the recipe.

Pick up artificial sweeteners approved by the FDA for sweetening drinks, such as Sweet'N Low, Splenda, Equal or Sweet One.

Saccharin or Sweet'N Low can be used in baking, substituting it for only half the sugar in the recipe, according to All Recipes. Using Splenda tends to decrease the baking time, so check periodically to make sure you don't overbake. Aspartame or Equal are not recommended for use in cookies or cakes because they lose their sweetening power when heated.
