How to Get Food Stamps in Montana (SNAP)

The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program in Montana provides food assistance to low income families. This program aims to improve nutrition and wellness of SNAP recipients. If applicants are approved to receive benefits, a specified monthly amount based upon income and family size will be allotted on a electronic benefit transfer card. EBT cards can be used at participating grocery stores displaying the Quest logo. To be eligible, applicants must meet income requirements, fill out an application and attend a mandatory in-house interview through their local Office of Public Assistance.

      Determine your eligibility. Applicants must meet the gross and net income requirements in order to be considered for food stamps. Countable household resources cannot exceed a net income standard of $2,150 for a family of five and more that $3,000 for households that include a family member 60 years or over.

      Apply for SNAP at your local Office of Public Assistance. To print out an online application, visit Montana's Official State website. Navigate to the Department of Public Health and Human Resources. Under Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), click on the "Download Application for Public Assistance" link. Drop off or mail the application to your local Office of Public Assistance.

      Fill out the Social Security numbers, birth dates and total income of all household members on the application. The application also requires that you list housing, medical and utility expenses.

      Expect your application to be reviewed within two weeks. Montana's Department of Public Health and Human Resources should mail you a letter with a mandatory interview time and date. Attend the interview on time. Contact your local Office of Public Assistance if you must reschedule or to request a phone interview.

      Bring in required documents listed in your interview packet. Required documents include two forms of valid identification, your Social Security card and current employment pay check stubs. Other necessary documents may include utility, rent/mortgage and medical receipts.

      Await an acceptance letter from Montana's Department of Public Health and Human Resources approving your benefit amount. Activate your EBT debit card account promptly by calling the number provided on the acceptance letter.
