Sorbitol Alternatives
Sorbitol is a low calorie sugar substitute used in many products such as candy, gum, ice cream and baked goods. Sorbitol is often used as a sugar substitute because of its low calories content and the fact that it does not contribute to tooth decay or cause browning like other sugar substitutes. While sorbitol has its advantages there are alternatives to sorbitol for individuals who prefer not to consume it.-
Sucralose

Sucralose is more commonly refereed to as Splenda and is found in many diet soft drinks and low calorie desserts. Sucralose is a calorie-free sweetener and does not affect blood sugar making it a common ingredient in food products designed for diabetics. Sucralose can also be purchased in a powder form and used from home baking and as a coffee or tea sweetener.
Aspertame

Aspertame is an older sortbitol alternative that is often found in diet beverages. It can also be purchased in powdered form and added to drinks. It is commonly sold as Nutrasweet. Aspertame is not recommended for baking or other uses at high temperatures which can cause a decrease in the levels of sweetness.
Stevia

Stevia is considered to be a natural low calorie sweetener as it is derived from the leaves of different herbs and spices. It has little effect on blood sugar is its use in low calorie drinks and foods is rising within the United States. Stevia can be used for baking or as a drink sweetener.
Acesulfame Potassium

Acesulfame potassium is more commonly known in the United States as Sunett and Sweet One. It has a bitter aftertaste and is usually mixed with other chemical ingredients to mask the aftertaste. Acesulfame does not degrade at high temperatures like some other sorbitol alternatives and can therefore be used for baking in addition to sweetening drinks.
