What Are the Functions of Simple Carbohydrates?
-
Function
-
Carbohydrates fuel the body and provide energy. Our bodies need energy to function properly. A low-carbohydrate diet can cause fatigue, a lack of endurance and stamina and poor mental concentration. Carbohydrates are also important for the proper functioning of our brain and nervous system.
Simple Carbohydrates
-
Simple carbohydrates are found in refined sugars, fruit and milk. It's healthier to eat foods like fruit and milk because they contain vitamins, fiber and other important nutrients. Refined sugars are devoid of nutrients and are called "empty calories."
Conversion
-
An enzyme called amylase breaks carbohydrates down into glucose (blood sugar), which is converted into energy. Excess glucose is stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen. Only a small amount of glucose can be converted into glycogen and stored for later use. The surplus is converted into fat.
