How to Check Triglyceride Levels & MCT Oil

Long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) are derived from fats eaten in foods, or they are converted from other energy sources like carbohydrates. Triglycerides are the chemical form in which most fat exists in the body, and in most foods we eat. If calories from a meal are not immediately used, they are converted to triglycerides and transported to fat cells where hormones regulate their release for energy between meals. However, if not used, triglyceride levels can elevate and cause numerous health problems. Unlike most long-chain triglycerides that humans ingest, MCTs are medium-chain triglycerides found in coconut oil, palm oil and clarified butter. According to Smart Publications, although these MCT oils are fat, they more closely resemble carbohydrates, are easier to digest than LCTs and are better for you. Unfortunately, the blood test to check triglycerides has to be ordered and conducted by a health care professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Make an appointment with your health care professional to order a blood test that checks triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are measured as part of a lipoprotein panel (lipid panel) which includes triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL (high density lipoprotein), and LDL (low density lipoprotein).

    • 2

Fast from food and alcohol for 9-12 hours prior to the blood test. Triglyceride levels are based on fasting plasma triglyceride levels. Results may be inaccurate if the blood test is done just after eating since fat levels are affected by the foods recently eaten.

Return to your health care professional for blood test results. To better understand your triglyceride LCT and MCT levels refer to the following guide based on fasting plasma triglyceride levels.

      Normal: Less than 150 mg/dL

      Borderline-high: 150 to 199 mg/dL

      High: 200 to 499 mg/dL

Very high: 500 mg/dL or higher
