How Much Should You Urinate in 8 Hours?

One thing that humans have in common is that we all go to the bathroom. Normal urination frequency varies but there is a healthy range. Different conditions including health, fluid intake and age play factors in how much we urinate.
  1. Frequency

    • Most people's normal frequency is roughly four to 10 times in a 24-hour day and varies with each individual. When eight hours of uninterrupted sleep is factored in, the frequency lowers to four to 10 times in 16 hours. This can be further broken down into two to five times in an 8-hour period.

    The Urinary System Process

    • The urinary system keeps the chemicals and water in the body balanced. After sustenance is digested, waste called urea is carried in the bloodstream to the kidneys where it is removed and turned into urine. Urine then travels to the bladder. The bladder's nerves tell the brain when it needs to be emptied.

    Factors in Urinary Frequency

    • A healthy bladder can hold around 16 oz. of urine comfortably for 2 to 5 hours. Normal frequency depends on fluid intake and type consumed. Medications called diuretics increase the urination rate. Urinary system health and age can also affect frequency.
