Products That Contain Fructose
Fructose is a naturally occurring sugar that is often found in fruits and vegetables. It typically doesn't have a huge effect on blood sugar, so it's naturally low glycemic. However, it's found in many processed foods in the form of high fructose corn syrup, or HFCS. This processed sugar is 55 percent fructose and 45 percent glucose. While the jury is still out on whether HFCS is harmful, it's well-known that an excess of sugar can contribute to obesity.-
Fruit
-
Fruit is the most well-known source of naturally occurring fructose. The body handles the amount of fructose in fruit well, and it derives additional benefit from the wealth of vitamins and minerals present in fruit. Due to the amount of fructose in this food group, fruits should be well-balanced with other foods in order to create a healthy diet.
Veggies
-
It's a little-known fact that most vegetables contain fructose. Carb-rich veggies such as carrots, corn and potatoes are particularly rich. While all veggies are healthy in moderation, sticking to the more colorful foods like peppers, tomatoes and squash will help keep your fructose consumption at a safe level.
Breakfast Cereals
-
The majority of breakfast cereals have a startlingly large amount of HFCS. Far from being part of a balanced breakfast, these cereals ensure a quick energy rush and then subsequent crash. Eat them in moderation or trade them for a high-fiber variety and some fruit.
Juice
-
In addition to a fruit's own sugars, fruit juice often contains huge amounts of added fructose or other sugar. In calorie and sugar content, juice can often rival sodas or fountain drinks! Keep juice intake limited or stick to all-natural, organic varieties. Typically, though, fresh, whole fruit tends to be a better option.
Yogurt
-
Many yogurts, especially low-fat or fat-free varieties, include fructose or HFCS. Look for a brand of yogurt that balances the large sugar content with protein to ensure additional satiety and health benefits.
