Foods With Sulforaphane

Sulforaphane is a powerful antioxidant. It also stimulates the production of naturally occurring detoxifying enzymes in the body. Phytochemicals.info states that eating foods containing sulforaphane reduces the risk of cancer, in particular, breast and prostate cancer. Epidemiological research has shown that people who consume large quantities of sulforaphane reduces incidences of cancer. What's more, animal tests indicate that it also reduces the frequency, size and number of tumors. Sulforaphane is found in cruciferous vegetables, and is only released into the body after ingestion.

    • Broccoli contains a large amount of sulforaphane, with broccoli sprouts being the richest food source. The National Health Institute found the sulforaphane concentration in broccoli sprouts was 1153 mg per 100 g (dry weight), more than any other food source, and 10 times that of mature broccoli at just 44 mg to 171 mg per 100 g (dry weight).

    • Cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens and watercress are all examples of cruciferous vegetables that contain sulforaphane.

      Researchers at the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center discovered that men who ate at least three servings of cruciferous vegetables each week were 41 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer.
