Diet for Weak Nails
Weak fingernails can be an unpleasant and embarrassing problem. There are several causes of nail weakness, such as over exposure to water, humidity, or use of certain cleaning agents, detergents or soaps, but the most common cause is diet.-
Anaemia
-
Weak or brittle nails can be evidence of anaemia, a blood disease resulting in a lack of haemoglobin in the blood. If you suspect you are suffering from anaemia you should see a doctor. An iron-rich diet can help prevent anaemia, including such foods as red meat, liver, broccoli, spinach, clams, shrimp, sardines, lentils, and enriched breakfast cereals.
Calcium deficiency
-
Weak nails can also indicate a lack of calcium in the diet; calcium is a mineral essential for healthy bones and teeth. To gain more calcium, eat diary products, particularly cheese and yogurt, or leafy green vegetables such as okra. Tofu is another source to pursue.
Vitamin deficiency
-
Vitamins are necessary for strong nails; specifically vitamins A, B, C, D and E. Foods that are rich in these include fruits and vegetables, wheat germ and rice, mushrooms, eggs, and oils. Try to eat a balanced diet and drink lots of water and your nails should improve. If you wish you can also take a vitamin supplement.
