List of Acid Reflux Foods

Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER), also known as acid reflux or acid regurgitation, is caused when the lower esophageal sphincter spontaneously opens or does not close properly, and the food you've just eaten rises up into the esophagus with digestive acids. This brings an unpleasant acidic taste at the back of your mouth, and is often accompanied by heartburn, a burning sensation in your throat or chest.

It's common to have these symptoms occasionally, but if you have them a couple times a week or more, you likely have Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and should see your doctor to discuss treatment options such as lifestyle changes, medication or surgery.

Several foods can trigger acid reflux and should be avoided if you have GERD.
  1. Avoid

    • If you frequently experience acid reflux, foods to avoid include chocolate, peppermint, spicy foods, tomato-based foods, citrus fruits, pineapple, fatty and fried foods, sodas with caffeine, alcohol, coffee, creamed foods and soups, most fast foods, oils, whole milk, garlic and onions. Candy, gum, and all forms of tobacco should also be avoided.

    Safe

    • Foods that are safe to eat include low-fat dairy and meats, vegetables (not fried), all non-citrus fruits except tomatoes and pineapple, grains, herbal tea except for mint varieties and non-citrus juices. Adding prebiotic supplements to your diet is recommended to aid digestion.

    Tips

    • Eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day is recommended, rather than eating three large meals. Do not lie down for three hours after eating, giving yourself plenty of time to digest. Wear loose-fitting clothing during and after meals, and do not bend over after eating. Losing excess weight often helps eliminate or reduce acid reflux.
