Recommended Servings of the Food Groups
The United States Department of Agriculture promotes well-being and healthy eating through the food pyramid, a set of guidelines designed to help Americans determine what foods to eat on a daily basis. Following the daily recommended serving sizes of each food group ensures a well-rounded diet.-
Whole Grains
-
Whole grains and legumes provide complex carbohydrates, which are an excellent source of energy. It is recommended that you eat six to 11 servings of whole grains every day.
Fruits and Vegetables
-
Fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrients and vitamins. They are also high in fiber and low in fat. The American Heart Association recommends eating three to five servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruit daily.
Dairy
-
Dairy items such as skim milk and low-fat yogurt provide calcium for bone strength. Try to eat two to three servings of low-fat dairy items each day. For children, it is recommended to eat two or more servings per day. For pregnant or breastfeeding women and older adults, four or more servings are recommended daily.
Meat, Beans and Eggs
-
Meat, beans and eggs provide your body with protein, iron and zinc. The American Heart Association recommends two servings of lean meat, poultry, seafood or vegetarian proteins each day. Aim to eat at least two servings of fish each week.
Fats and Sweets
-
Fats and sweets are often high in caloric content yet low in nutrition. While it is all right to enjoy fats and sweets in moderation, it is recommended that you use them sparingly.
