Foods That Reduce Excessive Stomach Acid

Fatty and spicy foods can cause excessive stomach acid. You can counter your consumption of acid-producing foods by eating alkaline-producing foods, which help keep your body balanced so your stomach does not produce so much acid. Eating these types of food can also help fight excess stomach acid caused by stress, according to Trans4mind.
  1. Vegetables

    • Some vegetables can be a great source of alkaline and can reduce excessive stomach acid. Green vegetables such as parsley, raw spinach, broccoli, barley grass and celery provide high amounts of alkaline, reports Trans4mind, as do garlic and artichokes, according to Energise for Life. Carrots, green beans, lima beans, beets, lettuce and zucchini also contain alkaline. You can also eat squash, asparagus, rhubarb, fresh corn, mushrooms, onions, peas, potatoes and cauliflower for low levels of alkaline. Avoid pickled vegetables, pinto and navy beans, sweet potatoes, cooked spinach and kidney beans, vegetables that can cause your stomach to produce acid.

    Fruits

    • You can also eat fruits including dried figs and raisins, which are high in alkaline, as are dates, black currants, papaya, kiwi and pears, though to a lesser extent. Coconut, sour cherries, tomatoes, peaches, avocados, mangoes, watermelon and strawberries contain low levels of alkaline. Stay away from blueberries, cranberries, bananas, plums, canned fruit and processed fruit juices, which contain some acid, says Trans4mind.

    Grains and Cereals

    • While no grain or cereal contains high amounts of alkaline, lentils, sweet corn, wild rice, quinoa, millet and buckwheat have a little alkaline and can help balance the acid produced by your body. However, avoid white rice, white pasta, white bread, pastries and biscuits.

    Dairy

    • By eating soy cheese, goat cheese, soy milk, buttermilk, almond milk and whey, you are ingesting small amounts of alkaline. Parmesan and processed cheese make you produce acid, so they should be avoided.

    Nuts

    • Eating hazelnuts, almonds, chestnuts and Brazil nuts can reduce excess acid in your stomach. Conversely, peanuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans and pistachios can cause stomach acid.

    Beverages

    • Drinking alkaline beverages can help reduce stomach acid. Herbal teas, green and ginger teas and lemon water are alkaline rich. Avoid consuming black tea, coffee, beer, liquor, wine, soda and cocoa, as they all cause acid.
