Clear Liquid Diet Options

A clear liquid diet is designed to provide a baseline level of electrolytes and sugars to keep your body going while preventing any residue from building up in the digestive tract. Clear liquid diets are often prescribed before surgical procedures or for people with acute intestinal infection or distress. Clear liquid diets are not intended for long-term use. They do not provide enough calories to maintain healthy body function for more than a few days.
  1. Drinks

    • Clear liquids are defined by opacity; any liquid that you can see through qualifies as a clear liquid. Avoid anything with pulp, but continue to enjoy your favorite non-pulp juices such as apple and white grape. Water is an obvious option, and sparkling water is fine. You can add pulp-free lemon or lime juice if desired. Black coffee and tea should be enjoyed in moderation, and the weaker they are the better. Clear sodas and sports drinks are fine. For some procedures, like barium enemas, your doctor may ask you to avoid any red-colored beverages because these can skew the results of the test, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    Food Substitutes

    • While there are no solid foods on the clear liquid diet, certain salty or savory options help to satisfy a hungry clear-liquid dieter. Chicken or vegetable broth is salty, warm and nourishing. It is okay to add salt and pepper, although it is best to avoid herbs. If you are on a low-sodium regimen, choose the low-salt versions of chicken or vegetable broth or bouillon cubes.

    Sugar

    • You are allowed to consume both sugar and honey while on a clear liquid diet. Sugar helps stave off hunger and boosts energy and strength. Ice pops (without pulp or fruit pieces) and clear gelatin are other options. You may also enjoy sucking on hard candies.
