Why Is it Important to Eat a Well-Balanced Diet?
-
The Food Groups
-
A well-balanced diet incorporates food from six major groups. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, every day a person should eat at least three ounces of whole-grain bread, pasta or rice; one to three cups of vegetables; one to two cups of fruit; two to three cups of milk; two to six ounces of meat or beans and three to six teaspoons of oils. These amounts vary according to age, sex and amount of physical activity.
Function
-
When you eat a balanced diet, you'r giving your body the vital nutrients it must have. These include proteins, carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Proteins help build strong muscles, carbohydrates provide energy for daily tasks, fatty acids are converted into important chemicals. Vitamins and minerals help your organs function and provide the building blocks for structures such as bones and teeth.
Splurges
-
According to the U.S.D.A., a balanced diet also may have room for what is called discretionary calories. This is an allowance for extra servings from the food groups; or higher-calorie forms of certain foods; or added fats and sugars; or "empty" calories from candy, soda and alcohol. Your discretionary calories should range from 100 to 300 calories a day.
