Types of Alkaline Water
Alkaline water is the subject of many health claims by the alternative health community. Proponents claim that alkaline water, which has a higher pH than tap water, neutralizes acid in the bloodstream, helping the body absorb nutrients more efficiently. Other touted benefits include increasing energy, speeding metabolism and slowing the aging process. Though these claims have not been proven, alkaline water, which is available in several varieties, has become popular.-
Distillation
-
Distillation is the simplest way to make alkaline water. The process removes viruses, bacteria and contaminants from water by evaporating regular water into steam and then condensing it back into a purified liquid. Any toxins in the water are supposed to make it slightly acidic, so once it is distilled and these toxins are removed, the water is slightly alkaline.
Alkaline Ingredients
-
Another variety is made by adding alkaline ingredients to it. One of the easiest ways to do so is to add a few lemon drops to regular water. Other alkaline ingredients include pH drops, available at health stores, and baking soda, which can raise the pH level dramatically, so use caution.
Ionized Water
-
Ionization is the process of running water over positive and negative electrodes, producing two separate types of water, one acidic and one alkaline. Water ionizers are typically attached to a tap of a typical faucet and ionize water automatically when they are turned on. Some specialists claim ionized water is particularly valuable because it is full of antioxidants.
