Citrus Fruits That Contain the Naringenin Compound

Naringenin is a naturally occurring substance that is commonly found in citrus fruits. This particular substance is classified as a bioflavonoid and, like other bioflavonoids, it has many biological effects that could contribute beneficially to human health. Although several research studies have been done to investigate the properties and sources of naringenin, more research is still needed to determine how regular consumption of fruits containing this compound can impact overall health.
  1. Grapefruit

    • One of the most common sources of the naringenin compound is grapefruit. The juice is where most of the naringenin is located, with grapefruits having a particularly high concentration. In fact, the characteristic bitter taste of grapefruit juice is due to the presence of naringenin.

    Oranges

    • Along with grapefruits, oranges are the most commonly eaten fruit containing naringenin. All types of oranges contain this compound, including the common sweet orange, Citrus sinenis, and mandarin orange, Citrus reticulata. Some lesser known types of oranges also contain this natural chemical, such as Citrus aurantium (often called zhiqiao or bitter orange), which is used in traditional Chinese medicine and to to make marmalade and flavored liqueurs.

    Yuzu

    • Yuzu is another type of citrus fruit that contains naringenin. Yuzu has a tart flavor, similar to that of a grapefruit, and is often used in Japanese and Korean cooking.
