Probiotics for Pets

Probiotics are bacteria that aid digestion by increasing absorption of important nutrients in the body. Bacteria live in the bodies of humans and animals and help support the immune system. Probiotics exist in foods and dietary supplements and can improve the overall health of domestic pets and people. You can find probiotics in foods such as yogurt and juices. Interest in probiotics has increased as more Americans discover health benefits in dietary supplements for people and pets. According to "An Introduction to Probiotics," a 2007 article from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Americans tripled their use of probiotics from 1994 to 2003.
  1. Facts

    • Probiotics can help strengthen a pet's immune system by increasing the production of enzymes that support digestion. According to The Pet Health and Nutrition Center, 70 percent of an animal's immune system lives in its gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Providing a pet with probiotics can keep it's intestinal tract healthy and prevent the spread of infection and disease.

    Effects of Stress

    • The amount of stress (e.g., anxiety, depression) in a pet's life can alter the availability of good bacteria in the GI tract which supports good health. Heavily processed foods and age can also decrease the amount of good bacteria in a pet's system. Pet owners can find probiotics in supplements, powder form or in pet food. Probiotics also can enhance production of microflora (living microorganisms) in a pet's immune system.

    Administering Probiotics

    • Pet owners should be cautious when purchasing pet foods with probiotics. Traditionally, manufacturers prepare pet foods at high temperatures, thereby decreasing the amount of good bacteria. Examples of good bacteria include lactobacillas, acidophilus and bacillus. Pet owners can administer probiotics in powder form or capsules, or try mixing probiotics with a pet's food. For best results, ask a veterinarian to recommend proper probiotic use for your pet.
