Foods or Drinks With Lactobacillus Casei

Lactobacillus casei grows naturally in the human digestive system. The bacteria help the digestive system operate properly, boost immune function and help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Lactobacillus casei is found in naturally fermented foods, which have been used as a folk remedy for centuries, according to PeaceHealth. The bacteria are also available as probiotic supplements.
  1. Yogurt

    • Some commercially produced yogurt contains lactobacillus casei, such as Stonyfield Farm or Lifeway yogurt. Check the labels to make sure the yogurt was naturally fermented and not heat-treated, as heat will destroy lactobacillus casei.

    Kefir

    • Kefir is a cultured food similar to yogurt, but with higher levels of probiotics. The food varies in consitency, from yogurt-textured to pourable. Kefir is made from milk, but most people with lactose intolerance can consume kefir. Lifeway kefir yogurt is a popular brand, or you can produce your own at home with a culture starter kit.

    Cheese

    • Naturally aged cheeses that have not been pasteurized contain lactobacillus casei. Bacteria-ripened cheeses include gouda, cheddar, provolone, gruyere, edam and emmental. Some cheesemakers add probiotics to the cheese during or after the process to provide an additional health benefit beyond the natural bacteria.

    Beverages

    • Milk naturally contains lactobacillus casei. DanActive is a probiotic drink and Yakult is a fermented dairy drink, both with lactobacillus strains.
