Performance Nutrition Certification

According to the International Sports Science Association, a certification in performance nutrition covers "the science behind nutrition and its effects on performance, muscle growth and fat loss." The training required to attain this certification includes education on the role of nutrition in maximizing athletic performance.
  1. Purpose

    • Also known as sports nutrition, performance nutrition involves tailoring the diet to achieve optimal athletic performance. The knowledge necessary to achieve this includes body-composition training, metabolic evaluation, menu development and exercise metabolism.

    Facts

    • As of August 2010, the cost of certification ranges from $595 to $2000. In preparation for the examination, students practice self-directed learning with textbooks and online resources. For most courses, students must attain a score of 70 percent or above on the exam for certification, and the Personal Trainers Association recommends a minimum of six months of study before the exam.

    Prerequisites

    • Prerequisites for certification courses vary considerably. For example, ISSA's SNC has no prerequisites. Certification through the ISSN requires "at least two years' experience as a certified health professional," although students with a bachelor's degree in a related field need have only one year of work experience.
